The Periodic Table Printmaking Project

I keep meaning to post something about this email I received from Jenn, who came up with the fantastic idea to create a periodic table of printmaking, to which I contributed the element Scandium. It's pretty exciting news:

Dear Periodic Table Artists –

I'm excited to tell you about the next steps for the Periodic Table Printmaking Project. The dates are not finalized yet, but the table will be shown by the Chemical Heritage Foundation in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from September 2009 until February 2010. The CHF is a non-profit organization that "serves the community of the chemical and molecular sciences, and the wider public, by treasuring the past, educating the present, and inspiring the future." They are in the process of building a new museum space to house their permanent collection, but will also feature a gallery showcasing changing exhibitions. Ours will likely be the 3rd they display. (I will have more about how this came about on the project blog soon.)

Additionally I am working with their curatorial staff to make the table into a traveling exhibit to be featured at some of their sister organizations around the US.

There's also plans afoot for a book to come out of this project, which would be amazing- thanks to Jenn for putting in so much time and hardwork co-ordinating this!

Yay! I sold something today

I sold a copy of the print I made for the Periodic Table Print project today, which means I shall no doubt soon be going on a mini-etsy spending spree. Take a look at the Flickr Group for the project- nearly all the elements are in now and it's looking pretty impressive. I've added a new copy of the print to my Etsy shop for just $20 (£10 to us in the UK) if you want to start to build your own collection of periodic table prints then take a look here and see some of the other prints from the project that are currently up for sale on Etsy.

Here's my print for Jenn's Periodic Table Printmaking project. You can take a look here to see it in place amongst all the other prints that have come in so far. There are some truly amazing prints in the project, and I wish I had done a better job with mine- but my plan to screenprint something for submission went out of the window when I ended up spending all my time turning things gold. Instead I used two gocco screens to make the 6x6" image, and carved a rubber to create the 'Sc' that represents Scandium.

Here's a little bit of what i've been working on over the last few weeks. Today I think I finished papering the shelving, got the ornaments out of the boxes and wrote down a list of things still to do. It's a pretty long list considering the deadline is 4.30 on Tuesday.

This weekend I shall be making a bird box, a wormery, and a collection of peg dolls, all with the help of two lovely children. I'm behind on my projects for the new book, behind on my contribution to the periodic table print project, and i'm not even going to start to tell you how behind I am on things like cleaning and feeding myself properly. My poor allotment has been left to fend for itself and all I can do is hope that on Wednesday i'll be able to drag myself down there and rescue it from weeks of neglect.
